The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the UK and was the second largest in the world in 2013 with 40,763 finishers. The first edition was held in 1981 with 12,000 runners.The course starts in Newcastle, takes in the iconic Tyne Bridge, runs through Gateshead passing the famous international athletics stadium and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields.
