In 1984, the Daily Express Sabah Marathon was held, marking the first marathon in Sabah after a period of more than 20 years. After its success, Championship Sport Events Sdn. Bhd. organized the Borneo International Marathon (BIM) with Mr. Andrew Voon as its Race Director. The inaugural BIM in 2008 had three categories – 10km, 21km and 42km – and was participated by 529 runners. The Borneo Marathon has since become a regular event held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia.
