The Ellerbe Marathon has remained a steadfast event in North Carolina’s running community, originating from the efforts of Mark Long and Doug Dawkins in the early 1990s. It began with humble beginnings, relying on word of mouth and paper entries. Through numerous challenges, including changes in management and the impact of Covid, the marathon has persevered, maintaining its “Old School” charm. It offers custom medals and pottery wine cups for finishers, along with snacks at aid stations and a post-race meal. The event continues to thrive, curated for the enjoyment of its dedicated participants.
